International Summer School on Compliance Management in Lublin: A Week of Learning, Exchange, and Hands-On Engagement with Modern Compliance Practices

From 9 to 13 June 2025, the city of Lublin in Poland hosted the International Summer School on Compliance Management at Wyższa Szkoła Przedsiębiorczości i Administracji (WSPA). The event was part of the EUComplianceM4UA project (101179706, ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE) and brought together lecturers, researchers, and project coordinators from universities across Ukraine, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Portugal.
The Summer School focused on innovative teaching methods, digitalisation, and gamification as key elements for advancing compliance education. These approaches were explored through interactive workshops, practical training sessions, and collaborative activities designed to deepen knowledge of compliance management while strengthening international academic partnerships.

Highlights from the Week:
Day 1: The programme opened with a campus tour of WSPA followed by the official inauguration. Presentations from Ukrainian partner universities set the stage:
Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs on legal and regulatory frameworks for compliance Izmail State University for Humanities on compliance risk management and internal controls Central Ukrainian National Technical University on compliance auditing and regulatory reporting Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics on corporate social responsibility and ESG compliance V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University on compliance culture and organisational training.

Day 2: Emphasising digitalisation and gamification, Jan Vašek from the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, presented an engaging cybersecurity business game and led a workshop on modern teaching methodologies for compliance education. Anna Fomenko of Hochschule Wismar delivered training on critical literature review and self-assessment methods to enhance digital teaching and learning practices for faculty and students. The day concluded with a visit to the Baobab Integration Centre and a guided city tour.

Day 3: Ethical dimensions of compliance were addressed with hands-on workshops led by Susana Oliveira from Universidade Portucalense on developing university codes of ethics. Professor Ali Arnaout (Hochschule Wismar) explored the integration of artificial intelligence in compliance education, highlighting the role of digital tools in shaping future curricula. A cultural visit to Kazimierz Dolny rounded off the day.

Day 4: Discussions connected certification, quality assurance, and compliance in marketing. Susana Oliveira conducted a workshop on how ethical branding can be effectively taught using digital methods. Michał Furmanek (WSPA) provided practical training titled “Compliance in Marketing: When Values Are Confronted with Communication Objectives.” The day ended with an informal partner dinner fostering collaboration.

Day 5: The week concluded with a final roundtable discussion reflecting on outcomes and planning future steps. Participants visited Lublin Castle, a historic landmark symbolising the region’s rich heritage.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation This Summer School served as a vibrant platform for intercultural dialogue, digital innovation, and professional exchange. It strengthened networks, opened new research avenues, and built trust among European and Ukrainian academic communities.

Open Lecture & Strategic Talks: Strengthening Academic Ties with Hochschule Wismar

Prof. Dr. Ali Arnaout from Hochschule Wismar delivered an inspiring open lecture for students and faculty of #TviyKNU, joined by representatives from V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and Central Ukrainian National Technical University.
Following the lecture, Prof. Dr. Arnaout and Dr. Anna Fomenko engaged in productive discussions on expanding cooperation, introducing double diploma programs in international management, and launching joint academic projects. They met with deans from three top Ukrainian economic faculties: Prof. Anzhela Ignatyuk (KNU), Assoc. Prof. Vitaliy Dyachek (Karazin University), and Prof. Nataliya Shalimova (Central Ukrainian NTU).

COMPLIANCE LEADERSHIP FORUM 2025

On April 25 in Kyiv, the Compliance Leadership Forum brought together top experts in transparency, ethics, and corporate responsibility. Prof. Dr. Ali Arnaout and Dr. Anna Fomenko from Wismar University led a standout session on value-driven leadership as part of the EUComplianceM4UA project. The forum featured insights from industry leaders, discussions on global standards and compliance innovation, and highlighted the pressing need to prepare graduates for compliance roles. Briefing Highlights German-Ukrainian Collaboration in Compliance Education

On April 24, 2025, the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center hosted the briefing "Bridging Borders Through Compliance Management Education: Germany and Ukraine". The event spotlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation, the role of Erasmus+ in supporting Ukrainian projects, and the growing relevance of compliance education in science and management.
Moderated by Iryna Shteimiller (V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University), the panel featured key voices from academia and industry, including Prof. Dr. Ali Arnaout, Prof. Andreas Steininger, Dr. Anna Fomenko (Hochschule Wismar), Svitlana Shytikova (Erasmus+ Ukraine), Ganna Tolstanova (Taras Shevchenko KNU), Natalia Shalimova (Central Ukrainian NTU), Roman Nesterenko (Karazin University), and Danylo Globa (YouControl).
The session set clear priorities for future institutional growth and academic cooperation between Germany and Ukraine.

First On Site Meeting for "EUComplianceM4UA"

International partners met in Wismar to drive forward the EU ComplianceM4UA project. Workshops and training sessions formed the core of the programme. The kick-off meeting of the EU project ‘EUComplianceM4UA’ took place at the University of Wismar from 20 to 23 January 2025. The aim was to put together and define the first work packages for all partners, as well as to gain initial insights into the different competencies in the area of compliance management. The meeting thus laid the foundation for further cooperation within the Erasmus+ project. As the lead partner, the University of Wismar would like to thank all participants for the good and successful cooperation.

Kick-off meeting for EU Compliance M4UA project started

On 22 November 2024, the online kick-off meeting for the EU ComplianceM4UA project, which aims to promote compliance management in Ukraine, took place. On 22 November 2024, Wismar Business School hosted the online kick-off meeting for the ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE project EUComplianceM4UA. The aim of the project is to introduce compliance management in Ukrainian universities. In his welcome address, project coordinator Prof. Dr. Ali Arnaout emphasised the importance of clear management practices. Dr. Anna Fomenko presented the project plan and highlighted the importance of effective communication. The 24-month project includes online and face-to-face meetings, quality assessments and close cooperation between partners.

EUComplianceM4UA strengthens compliance management in Ukraine

The EU project, supported by Wismar University of Applied Sciences and other EU partners, promotes the training of compliance management at Ukrainian universities. As part of the Erasmus+ programme "Capacity building in Higher Education", the ‘EUComplianceM4UA’ project is setting new standards in compliance management at universities in Ukraine. Wismar University of Applied Sciences is coordinating the collaboration between four EU universities and five Ukrainian partners to improve academic integrity and the employability of graduates. Over a period of 24 months, European compliance standards and digital learning methods will be introduced, including e-books and gamification elements. The initiators of the project are Prof. Dr. Ali Arnaout and Dr. Anna Fomenko from the Wismar Business School at Wismar University of Applied Sciences.
